In 1955 Herefordshire Mencap was started by the family and carers of people with a learning disability. Now, most of our Trustees and members are people with a learning disability.

Mencap meets several times a year to talk about things we need to do to make things happen for local people with a learning disability.

We have a Facebook page with lots of information about what we do and events.

We are members of Herefordshire Learning Disability Partnership Board and I also go to Healthwatch.

Mencap works on Safe Places in and around Herefordshire. So, when people feel frightened, they can go to a Safe Place like ECHO in Leominster.

We campaigned for a changing places toilet at the new shopping centre in Hereford and in some Halo leisure centres.

Every 3 months we have “Stay Up Late” discos at the Left Bank in Hereford. These are a lot of fun.

Last year we did a lot of work about politics so that people would understand more about the General Election in December. National Mencap came to talk to us about democracy and why we vote. Before the General Election we held meetings with the local candidates to become the MP and asked them questions about things that mattered to us.
